It's been almost nine years since my last post, not that I'm counting. In fact, I'd pretty much forgotten about this space. And reading my previous posts, they ring familiar, a closing yawp from one age to another across the vastness of time and space.Today is a very different day.
My values haven't changed. My ideals, even my complaints are mostly the same. But the world has changed; it's moved on. At least, it was moving on until just recently; now it feels as though it's stopped.
The Coronavirus/Covid-19 ordeal is not the first pandemic we've seen, even within in my lifetime. But it's the first pandemic of this magnitude in the digital age, and probably the most widespread health crisis since the 1918 flu pandemic, which hit at the tail end of World War I and about nine years before the beginning of the Great Depression.
But with the current strategies of isolation and shelter-in-place, not just in the United States but also throughout most of Europe, Asia, Australia, parts of Africa and South America, businesses are going to fail, people are going to lose jobs. We're well on the way towards a financial crisis as well as a health crisis. The world as we've known it has changed, and it might never return. We may have to adapt to a new normal once we make it through to the other side of this latest crisis.
These are dark times -- not without hope or promise, but with a great deal of uncertainty.
